O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, she graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from Wheaton's North High School. Before making the move from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. The career path O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring character on ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando is her first appearance as a leading character in ABC's NYPD Blue. The role of the tall and blonde squad secretary was in the series from 1993 until 1996. For each of those years, she received one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of Drama Series.
